For the first time, 48 nations competed โ up from 32. The expanded format added 16 more teams and 40 more matches, giving more nations than ever a chance on the world stage.
Three Host Nations
USA, Canada and Mexico co-hosted the tournament across 16 cities โ the first World Cup hosted across three nations simultaneously.
Tournament Format
12 groups of 4 teams each. Top 2 from each group plus 8 best third-placed teams advanced to the Round of 32, then knockout rounds to the Final.
Historic Result
Spain became World Champions for the 5th time, beating France 2-0 in the Final at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey on July 19, 2026.
